Is it, or does it just have a *really* vocal following? Like Chris, I was under the impression that most web stuff was done with either PHP, Microsoft's tech-du-jour.Net, some Java, and a sprinkling of python, Ruby, etc.

I read somewhere that the overwhelming majority of web work is carried over from the early days of the web with the bulk being done with C/C++ on CGI/FastCGI and Perl. Java on the web is a relative upstart and so are all the other usual suspects.

There are a few web apps that I've had to use which were written on rails so my experience probably doesn't reflect the entire market.

I used to think.... Finally I realized it's no good.

Seems to me like these days, software development environments can be split into these general camps: Desktop: Microsoft Linux / Java Apple / Objective C Web: Microsoft Adobe Flash Javascript / cloud (Google, Amazon, etc.) PHP / MySql Mobile gizmos: Apple / Objective C Android / Java Microsoft / .NET Am I missing any significant religions, or does this pretty much sum it up?

Linux / gcc will be more close to the reality.

The Oracle was at Delphi! This is about 100 mile from Athens. Near Mount Parnassas. It was the upswelling gases that gave the Oracle her oddness.

I know. I played Titan Quest too.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

Don't forget configurable logic software - verilog / VHDL in particular. It may not be conventional software but it's definitely important for FPGA / CPLD development. (You've also missed python which is becoming much more prominent in quite a few areas)
