Seems to me like these days, software development environments can be split into these general camps: Desktop: Microsoft Linux / Java Apple / Objective C Web: Microsoft Adobe Flash Javascript / cloud (Google, Amazon, etc.) PHP / MySql Mobile gizmos: Apple / Objective C Android / Java Microsoft / .NET Am I missing any significant religions, or does this pretty much sum it up?

The Oracle was at Delphi! This is about 100 mile from Athens. Near Mount Parnassas. It was the upswelling gases that gave the Oracle her oddness.

I think if you are listing form factors for want of a better word, then to me "cloud" is something different from "web". I've seen "desktop" apps that utilise the "cloud". Web is websites/apps. Cloud is stuff running on scalable application frameworks like EC2/Azure/AppEngine. Also, I think you missed embedded. It may not be as visible, but there are a huge amount of devices that don't run a major OS and are just coded for directly in c (or even with tools like the .net micro framework).

AFAIK, desktop Java on Linux is not a significant dev platform at all. On the other hand, server-side Java ("Java EE") is huge.

                                      Yes, that is more accurate.

Well, Oracle is a db. Are people still doing desktop dev in Delphi?

Is it, or does it just have a *really* vocal following? Like Chris, I was under the impression that most web stuff was done with either PHP, Microsoft's tech-du-jour.Net, some Java, and a sprinkling of python, Ruby, etc.

I read somewhere that the overwhelming majority of web work is carried over from the early days of the web with the bulk being done with C/C++ on CGI/FastCGI and Perl. Java on the web is a relative upstart and so are all the other usual suspects.
