Yeah. That's what they say now. Just like they promised to keep the tool free forever, this will change too.

Read the article linked by Pete[^]. What do you expect them to do? get a day job flipping burgers, and hack on Reflector at night? The original Author, Lutz Roeder, already did include the "time bomb" forcing you to update, reserving himself the option to sell the tool one day.

From the article: "We were originally working on the assumption that the huge volumes of traffic Reflector would bring to our website would mean users would stop and look around our other tools. It turns out that this wasn’t the case." Well, *I* did what they thought everyone would do, and after looking around at their other tools, I decided that I simply can't justify the expense of buying their stuff for personal use. I think THAT is what happened in the case of a lot of other people too.

I agree. Any shareware product that starts out at $395 is not even remotely tempting to individual programmers. It's not so much that their marketing strategy for Reflector has failed; it's that their marketing strategy for the rest of their products has failed.

      Best wishes, Hans

I did read the article, where do you think I got the quote from?

          peterchen wrote:

To keep their promises. They didn't have to keep developing the tool. They could have kept the tool static and the new features could have been made as a pay tool.

          peterchen wrote:

The time bomb was there to force you to update so Lutz would only have to support one version. It's Red Gate's spin to say it was put in as an option to sell the tool one day.

Reflector, our beloved Reflector, will never be free again. From version 7 on, you'll have to dish out 35$. I don't know if it's a repost; search didn't produce results. Feels wrong. X|

For that matter, as an individual user; how hard would it be to reflect Reflector and remove the timebomb from the current free version?

They might not have got the halo effect they were hoping for with the free version; but they have gotten a forked tail, pitchfork, and horns effect by pulling the plug on it. There is exactly zero chance I will ever lobby for buying a redgate product in the future; and a 100% chance I will lobby against efforts by any co-workers to do so.

No, he was hired after Reflector was released. People blogged about it at the time. He did continue releasing new versions of Reflector even after he joined Microsoft though. Until Red Gate acquired it from him.

What, the current app can't run without internet access? If so, that's daft... There is a 50% chance that any given site will be blocked by our corporate firewall already!

                                    ((λ (x) `(,x ',x)) '(λ (x) `(,x ',x)))

It needs Internet access once the current version has expired.

There's not even one single alternative to Reflector. Software monopolies are bad, even if they are originally free (as we just found out).
