When my company wouldn't give me business cards with their "prefered" title to save money, I printed and passed out my own business cards with a title of: "Emperor of all Knowledge and Wisdom"...I soon receieved cards with my boring title. I was waffling between that and "King of Space and Time".

I'm not worried about whether I'm using C or C++. I'm just trying build up some windows and dialog boxes so the user doesn't have to use the command line. (I'm a command line kind of guy but my bosses say it's too antiquated) I didn't realize MFC was still around. In any case I just want to be able to put up some windows for user input.

HOWEVER, these days, .NET and C# are gaining rapid grounds for Windows' development. I don't know from your question if you NEED to develop in C++ or to develop Windows' application. Either way considering .NET might be helpful (note: I myself am sticking to C++ and haven't yet moved to .NET).

I thought that .NET were libraries to help the user with the interface, system, etc. and were usable from C++ or whatever VS. Can .NET be used from C++? I'd rather not use C#, I work with 2 guys who became C# experts and now choose to never use it again. They have a whole list of reasons why but when they get on their anti-C# soap boxes I usually excuse myself becasue I know they'll be at it for a while.

Hi All, I've been programming embedded processors and doing real time for quite a while and now I want to learn about Windows and how to use Visual Studio [2010] to do C++, put up windows and dialog boxes, etc. I thought I'd go to msdn, find the getting started stuff and get started. I cut and pasted the first example, regestering and putting up a window and it errored out on the window regestration. So now I come to the source of all knowledge, The Code Project, and would like to know how to get started using visual studio. If there are articals in CP to help me, that would be great! I've always found good stuff here in CP land. Thanks

I know where I can get a free copy that may not quite be legal. However, I'm working with High School students and I want everything on the up and up. So I want a LEGAL, cheap...or free...copy of windows 7. It's for a computer to develop software for our Robot. I'm donating a slighly older computer with Linux but we need Windoze. Thanks

  • How many of you actually have technically intelligent management
    J Joe Q

I have technically intelligent management...unfortunantly, they're all hardware guys who think you can hire anyone...emphasis on "ANYONE", to do software. If you do hardware, you can do software. They haven't figured out that software disicipline is a key, even as bad software cause huge problems and has caused programs to fail, be late, or at best, cause people to work a lot of overtime to meet a deadline. I'm an annomoly here, I am a software guy and they can't figure out why the projects I'm on tend to have fewer software problems, and in general, go smother. It's also becasue when the software ignorant give me an order to do something stupid, I ignore and do it the right way. They take credit for the decision later.

  • How good are your estimates
    J Joe Q

I use the old adage of once you come up with an estimate then "double value and up the units by 1" so if I estimate 2 days, I say 4 weeks. I'm fairly accurate and I'm never late (unless there's outside influence like last minute requirements changes, bosses putting me on a quick 1 day project that lasts the 2 weeks I'm suppose to be working on the other project, etc).

  • Suspended for fowarding email joke [modified]

I have a feeling the best performer's you'll ever get are really only average. I am a top performer and if you stop me from being who I am, I am no longer a top perfomer. I know that if I feel opressed, i.e. can't e-mail jokes, can't laugh, can't have fun, my performance goes down really quick. I've been on the opressive programs and the top performers get away from them as quickly as they can, leaving the average performers. This makes the higher average performers the Top performers. My 2 cents

  • Collaboration and Programming: Important or Not? [modified]
    J Joe Q

I have 25 years of programming experiance and I've tried collaborating with other people on various projects. I've found (apparently) I don't think like most other people and I take different directions than a lot of people. While I'm collaborating with others, typically I have to do a lot of explaining, a lot of convincing, a lot of talking. It takes a lot of time. But when I just code it up, with comments of course, and let other's peer review it later, they typically say, "Hey, that's cool way of doing it!" and it takes about 1/3 the time as when I'm "Collaborating".

  • Process, People, and Tools - where do you place your trust?
    J Joe Q

Processes - very little trust (Since I work developing the processes I know how bad they can be ;) ) They are only as good as your people. Tools - again, only as good as the people who use them. A screw drivers no good if you can only use a hammer. People - more to the point, the RIGHT people. Some I trust some I know not to trust. If you get the right people using the right tools with a process that is flexible enough to accomodate the job then...BAM! the project is a success.
