Not sure how it works, but anyone can have images included on the google map. Most are those 360 degree photos. Zoom in somewhere, such as a road along a beach. Then switch to the street view thing on that road. Then in the small map in the lower left, zoom in somewhere until you see the blue circles. Those are usually the 360 degree photos that someone made available (not exactly sure what platform the do that on, that gets integrated into google maps). In the upper-left label, you can see whose photo it is. In other places/hikes/businesses, you will sometimes see they were done by the Google person w/ the backpack.

I've had 2 tempurpedics, over the last 14 years. I get warm but adjust blankets accordingly. I like that my SO can toss and turn without my side moving. I really notice that when traveling with hotel mattresses. I tried the purple one at a store for a few minutes. I found the Sleep Number to be most compelling next bed - the adjustable firmness is of interest, along with a heating/cooling option.

Last time I was looking at a monitor, 4k seemed to only be useful once you get to 30+ inches. I went with two 27 inch monitors instead. Thinking if I need more in a few years (second desk or whatever), I'd go 4k and 30+ inches then.

They took a pounding when their auto-update software checked the box to install additional software previously not installed (Safari). As of lately, they don't auto-check the additional add-on software checkboxes, but still make them visible and available. No thanks, I don't need your iCloud Drive software.

  • Apple: You really do write awful software. A Time Machine saga.
    M mgama

The lovely iDevices tend to create bond to the iTunes account and computer user account that it is synced to. I follow the smart and reasonable Windows ideology of using a standard user account, and elevating to administrator when I need to do admin type of things. Using my account, I learn there is a iOS update. Yes iTunes, please install that on my device. BUT WAIT. iTunes wants me to update iTunes before it allows iTunes to download an upgrade for an iOS device. Elevation prompt to iTunes installer. iTunes installer running elevated via admin account installs and updates iTunes to the latest and greatest bloatware. At the end, the installer automatically launches iTunes, sees my connected iDevice, and offers to update it. Sadly, because of a tiny little oversight from Apple, iTunes is now running elevated via the admin account, and not my standard user account. It proceeds to see my phone as if it was new to the computer, and proceeds to wipe it and upgrade the OS. After the numerous iDevice reboots, I'm back to a upgraded but completely wiped device. Not what I call an upgrade. More like a format and reinstall new OS. So now I get to do a restore from an old backup. Great. Hey Apple: be careful about launching your apps at the end of your install - without some trickery you may be launching them as elevated. Which can also prevent some of your drag/drop interactions with the user's desktop from working.

Get a different hard drive? Mine is quiet, but when I was buying it and reading reviews some people complained that it was too loud, while others said it was nice and quiet. I bought the same hard drive a month or two later for a family member's computer, and it is louder than mine. Seems to be hit or miss.

  • .ISOs??? Bootdisks? How??? - VMWARE
    M mgama

I use VirtualPC, so my answer may or may not be applicable to VMWare. Option 1: Search the internet for bootdisks. I'm certain the WinME bootdisk includes CDROM drivers. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm[^] Option 2: Create a new Virtual HD. Attach the HD to another VM that you have already set up. Start that VM, insert/mount the Win9x ISO, copy the files to the new Virtual HD. Save changes. Remove the HD from that VM. Attach the HD to your new Win9x VM. Insert a boot disk (any boot disk will work that gets you do a dos prompt). Start the VM, navigate to the folder on the HD where you copied the files to, and run setup.

Sys-con got me too, but I haven't seen much from them lately. At one point I checked my email from my cell phone just because I could. In my inbox was one of their spam’s, so I deleted it from my phone, but when I sent a text message a day later (which I rarely do), there was a bunch of sys-con HTML markup appended to my text message. Maybe their spam caused a buffer overflow on my phone, planted spyware/virus, or something, but it was weird. I couldn't repro the event. Needless to say that made me even less of a fan of whatever it is that they do.

  • Bad Companies... [modified]

As others have stated, the domain expired. The domain is in the redemption. To get it out of redemption, you can pay the fee - I believe you can only do that with the registrar you registered through. Your other option is to let it expire and have it go back into the pool of domains being available for registration. If you do that, you need to be aware that someone else could swoop in and buy it first. I too have a domain in redemption. I didn't use the domain for anything, but I just bought it because it was my full name. Unfortunately RegisterFly happily took my money to register it for two years, and then only registered for one. Yes, I should have monitored the WHOIS information more closely for the actual expiration date, but I didn't. Instead I believed what the RegisterFly page told me, which was it expires 10 months from now. RegisterFly's terrible customer service hasn't responded to me in over 2 weeks... so take my advice -- STAY AWAY FROM REGISTERFLY.

Yeah, I'm sure they know more about drivers/firmware than me. I think for me, I had to install the Ralink software (whatever it was) then Vista could successfully install the Linksys driver. Without thw Ralink software, Vista failed to install the Linksys driver (which obviously sent me to the internet to find a solution that worked).

  • Confused by wireless signal strength
    M mgama

I'm thinking the fluctuation may be caused by some compatibility issue with another piece of hardware or driver. I have two of the same WMP54G cards for my PCs, well technically one is a v4.0 and the other is a v4.1. My main PC had the same fluctuation problem (in addition to losing it's connection every ~3 hours). The other MCE PC had a rock solid signal strength & speed. After swapping the cards, and wiping both machines, the main PC still has the fluctuation & slow speeds (without the connection loss problem) while the MCE is still rock solid. I've seen similar problems with a video card - it ran really hot in one PC, and perfectly cool in another. Could be a motherboard issue, or something else completely. I'm glad my connection isn't going down every 3 hours, but still dreaming of reliable connections. I may end up running CAT5 around my house. I've had it with Linksys (don't get me started on the WRT54G-v5). [edit] I ended up using the Ralink driver on the MCE machine which has the rock solid connection since there weren't Vista drivers put out by Linksys. Ralink is the maker of the chipset used in the card, so I think you are safe there.
