If you remember your history, you would recall that bin Laden "declared war" on the US, we tried to deal with it as a police action, and it didn't work. I would agree with you that having to kill people is regretable, but I would also say that sometimes its what I would call a necessary evil. I spent the 80's riding around in a balistic missle submarine, part of our so called MAD strategy. Someone can say that it was a crazy idea, but the end result, it worked. I'm happy we never had to use any of the weapons we had, it would have been a failure. The people we faced in the Soviet Union had the same hopes and fears as we did and wanted to go home and see their family every night just like me. The people we are dealing with in Al Quaeda look at the world differently and feel like they are on a mission from God..... you cannot reason with people like that. I also believe that the vast majority of people in the Muslim world have the same hopes, fears, and aspirations that I do. People who can't be reasoned with or feel they have nothing to lose are the most dangerous.

Way more than 25 cents overall, I just look at it as 25 cents worth of punctuation to the story.

I think the problem you have is believing that you can reason with everyone. When someone enters your hoe, your place of business or your country to try and kill you, the time for reason is over. Its fine to spout platitudes about discussing our differences, and when the other person is willing to talk, thats great. But some people have no interest in conversation. This guy was one of them.

High moral ground is fine in a civil case, this man and the people in his organization don't deserve the civil rights and processes we give criminals in our country. As for due process, he already confessed, so what good is it to have himm and a bunch of high paid lawyers calling for side bar discussions with a hand wrining judge?

He won't be organizing or helping to pay for any more attacks on innocent people. As long as people like the Navy Seals are willing to fight to protect you, you can spout your idealistic rhetoric. Remember this guy would have been more than happy to kill you or yours.

I think the hassle of a trial and the idea of 100 networks covering that guy with Eric Holder wanting to have it in Manhattan........ we were way better of spending the 25 cents on a bullet.

  • Removing duplicates from large text files (Performance needed)
    D Doug Goulden

To make it fairly simple, us a generic dictionary where each url key and an entry into the database. Read each line of the textfile one at a time and verify that the key doesn't exist if it doesn't add it to the dictionary. If the key does exist then ignore it. When you are all done use the foreach to go through each key writing it to a file as text. Something like Dictionary Urls = new Dictionary(); while(TextReader.Read()) { string key = TextReader.ReadLline(); if(!Urls.ContainsKey(key)) { Urls.Add(key, key); } } foreach(string s in Urls.Keys) { TextWriter.WriteLine(s); } Obviously you need to do all of the opening and closing of files, but this is probably the simplest way.

I read the article earlier, and I honestly agree with some of her conclusions. I agree that many, but not all people who go to college as an experience. In the US, college has been raised up as the Holy Grail with kids graduating from high school, immediately moving on and starting their liberal arts education with no idea what they want to do. You see a lot of people checking out customers at Wal-Mart who are still trying to pay off their college loans. I do agree that someone needs to study to learn good programming, and I would also agree that most people don't have the inclination or self discipline to do that on their own. But in my own case I have a grand total of 16 hours of college credits, and yet I manage to develop and maintain a group of applications for my company that are very lucrative. I'm probably an exception, having a broad background in the military, electronics, and the HVAC industry that my application is used in. The point I got from the article is that excluding people based on the paperwork can lead to someone missing out on a potential employee who would be an excellent employment choice. I think that someone's degree makes a useful filter, but actually having them write some code probably would provide a little more insight into their value. Just my 2 cents.... :)

  • Mechanic in the house?
    D Doug Goulden

I have an old Jeep Cherokee that will do the same thing on occasion. There is normally a spring on the brake pedal that returns the pedal to the "normal" position pulling the pedal up into the nonbraking position. In my case the spring was old and tired and allowed the pedal to sag slightly making the switch. All that I did was made sure to lift the pedal slightly with my foot when I exited the vehicle...... sounds silly but saved me the hassle of trying to climb under the dashboard and try to replace some spring. I would suggest applying the brake pedal while the car is in park and then letting off. Check the light to see if it is lit, then try lifting the pedal with your foot and verify the light goes off. If that fixes the problem, you can check to see if the switch position can be adjusted, replace the spring, or teach them to lift the brake pedal. You may have to try quite a few times to get the pedal to sag enough to make the switch.... it sounds like an intermittent problem.

  • Handyman in the house?

My guess is that you have a hinge similar to this on http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=21311[^]. What noramally holds the cup in the hole? If the hinge has screws similar to the one in the picture and they are stripped out, try putting toothpicks into the hole with wood glue. Just brek them off even with the door surface then you can run the crews back into the partially filled holes. If the cups were somehow held in place by friction..... then I would get some sandpaper, say grit and rough the surface of the cup that contacts the hole. There are several good 2 part epoxies that will hold metal fairly well and should hold up ok. Sometimes it comes in handy being a woodworker as a hobby.......

If the student had marched into the class room and loudly denounced the teacher or disrupted the teahers attempt to teach the class, I would agree. But when the teachers criticism is limited to calling the student a facist bastard for his beliefs and denouncing people who had voted against California's Prop 8, I think its pretty clear the real problem is the teahcer.
