For the first few years of married life, my wife and I decided not to have a television. (This was in the days before DSL or cable modems). I used to love to field the calls from the cable or satellite companies. The scripted responses came to an abrupt halt when I would say, "I don't have a television." One guy simply said, "I... uh... I guess you don't need cable then." Another tried to convince me that I should go buy a TV. Fun times.

Your Google prowess exceeds mine. I tried a number of searches without getting a hint of Skype being the problem. Thanks again.

I've actually made a small (~15" long 1/2" PVC) potato gun that would should carrots as well. Potato chunks worked better than carrots. Neither packed enough punch to do more than knock a squirrel off of the bird feeder on our deck. Only one showed any signs of dizziness :-D I think the noise did more to make it a deterrent.

  • What does it mean to be a member of Mensa?

I was fascinated by Mensa when I was a teenager and qualified to be a member by my scores on other tests, but then I thought, "Why would I pay money to be a member of this group?"

I live in central VA ~60-70 miles from the epicenter. After a couple of seconds it was pretty clear that it was an earthquake. Our building shook noticeably, but nothing fell off of any shelves.

  • Fun with Office 2010
    M melchizedek

I just updated my Office installation to Office 2010. After the update, my pointer began to jump randomly around the screen. I uninstalled my Logitech Marble Mouse and tried another mouse in another port, same problem. After searching for an answer on the Net, I started poking around the control panel. Right away, I noticed a new pointing device on COM1 called "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" What in the world? I use COM1 to interface with a lot of different HW, but I've never heard of one of these. Then I realized what was plugged in to my serial port - a Trimble GPS. Every second it was sending a binary packet to the serial port. Office had confused this with a pointing device and installed a driver which interpreted the GPS packets as pointing commands. Oh well, at least I found it pretty quickly.

  • Left or Right (for all you Axe players)
    M melchizedek

My son, though not left handed, shows preference for his left hand when hitting a baseball and some other activities. He plays guitar right handed. When he was first starting lessons, his guitar teacher commented that he was ahead of the game with his fretwork (left hand) but needed work on his strumming (right hand). He seems to have caught up now and is doing fine. I say let him try right handed. He may find he has a slight advantage on the fretboard.

  • Microsoft UI rant of the day
    M melchizedek

With almost every Windows app I've ever used, Ctrl-Z means undo. If you hit it multiple times it continues to undo until the change history has been exhausted. Just now, I was trying to delete an office-spam email in Outlook. I hit delete and nothing happened. In frustration I hit it a couple of more times. Then, when the server caught up, I ended up deleting several messages. No problem, right? I'll just use my old friend Ctrl-Z. I hit it once, the last deleted email reappears. I hit Ctrl-Z again... The last email gets deleted again. Huh? Continuing to press Ctrl-Z simply undeletes and re-deletes the same message over and over again! I know I can recover the messages from "Deleted Items", but what's the point of making Ctrl-Z work differently? I wonder what will happen if I try Ctrl-Y?

  • MacBooks can develop cracks: Apple responds predictably
    M melchizedek

Ahh. Now I understand why they were so quick to fix this when I called about another issue! I recently returned my MacBook for a CDROM repair under warranty. They were very good about repairing the CDROM even though I admitting dropping it (a short distance in the bag). They also immediately volunteered to fix the crack when I told them about it. If it hadn't been for the CDROM, I would have chalked it up to normal wear and tear and never called them about it. It must depend on which rep you talk to. I also purchased an AppleCare agreement, which may explain the better treatment.

I use this(free and open source): VirtuaWin I have found to have the fewest interaction problems with the software I use every day. It's fast and reliable. On one other product (the Windows Power Toys Virtual Window app, I think), I had problems with our customer service db (Onyx), but no problems with VirtuaWin. Hope this helps.
