Hmmm... When I was at school I always carried a Swiss Army Knife with me that my father bought me for my 8th birthday. It was useful for so many things and I would occasionally lend it to friends to sharpen pencils, etc. I even lent it to a teacher once to tighten some screws on the old projector. I remember him praising me for being "more prepared" than the others. Several of my friends had their parents buy one for them as a result. Oh for the good old days when kids trusted teachers and, just as important, teachers trusted the kids (a bit). ...and fathers bought their sons knives for practical purposes, not including murder. This was in the 60s-70s in England. My school still had Sabre and Fencing as sports along with Shooting and Shinty (a scary version of hockey, a bit like ice-hockey but played on dirt/grass - we played it on concrete). Surprisingly, there was no boxing or wrestling though.
